Case Study
Combatting Emerald Ash Borer Infestation through GIS-Driven Tree Inventory Management in Maple Grove

Source: GIS Cloud
The City of Maple Grove, renowned for its pristine parks and trails, faced a critical ecological challenge with an Emerald Ash Borer infestation. To address this, the city initiated a comprehensive tree inventory project aimed at identifying infected trees and assessing the extent of the pest damage. The project mobilized senior citizen volunteers, leveraging their dedication to environmental preservation.
Using the GIS Cloud’s Mobile Data Collection app, the city designed a user-friendly workflow for volunteers with no prior GIS experience. Custom forms enabled efficient data gathering, including tree species, condition, signs of infestation, and multimedia evidence (photos and audio). This data was visualized and analysed using the Map Editor, facilitating real-time insights for decision-making.
Map Viewer enabled seamless sharing of collected data among departments, ensuring a coordinated response to the infestation. The publicly accessible Map Portal further engaged the community by providing updates on affected areas and encouraging participation in mitigation efforts. This project exemplified how geospatial technology could empower communities to safeguard natural assets while maintaining operational efficiency.
