The Chenab Rail Bridge, situated between Bakkal and Kauri in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, stands as an engineering marvel. Soaring 359 meters above the riverbed, it claims the title of the world's highest rail-arch bridge. With an impressive arch span of 467 meters and a total length of 1,315 meters, it ranks as the seventh longest single-span bridge globally, exclusively for broad-gauge rail lines. This monumental bridge is an integral part of the Jammu-Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Line (JUSBRL) project, a monumental endeavor led by the Indian Ministry of Railways. The JUSBRL project encompasses numerous tunnels and bridges in a challenging, rugged, and mountainous terrain characterized by complex Himalayan geology.
The completion of this bridge will revolutionize travel in the region, reducing the current 12-hour journey between destinations to a mere six hours. This transformation is expected to stimulate the local economy and facilitate seamless connectivity between Jammu and Kashmir's summer and winter capitals, fostering both development and weather resilience.
