To commemorate its 100th anniversary in 2023, the Federal Office of Metrology and Surveying (BEV) of Austria launched the Austrian histMap. It is an interactive, web-based application available at maps.bev.gv.at. This project digitised and made publicly accessible over 3,000 historical map sheets covering eight different epochs, spanning 150 years of Austrian cartographic history. These map sheets were meticulously scanned, georeferenced, quality-checked, and converted into map tiles for high-speed viewing and seamless interaction. The platform allows users—ranging from historians and researchers to everyday citizens—to explore, compare, and analyse cartographic data across time. It supports targeted searches for features such as place names, mountains, rivers, and administrative areas, and includes detailed annotations about the mapping techniques used in each era, offering both a historical education and a technical resource. It operates as a 24/7 accessible digital public service, reinforcing its role as a critical component of Austria’s state infrastructure.
