In response to the devastating 2022 wildfire in Ceuta, the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMS), in collaboration with the National Geographic Institute of Spain, conducted a comprehensive impact assessment and post-fire analysis. This project focused on evaluating the damage caused by the wildfire, which burned through 5% of the city, destroying 65% of land classified as having high ecological value. Using detailed Land Use and Land Cover data from the National Geographic Institute, the team was able to map the extent of the wildfire damage, assess changes in the ecological value of the affected areas, and identify the potential risk of soil erosion due to the loss of vegetation. The integration of transport data and Digital Elevation Models (DEM) further supported the impact assessment, providing insights into population distribution and areas at risk of erosion. This information was crucial for planning post-fire recovery efforts and preventing further environmental degradation.
