    Project Details

Ordnance Survey (OS), in collaboration with the International Growth Centre (IGC) and the Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA), developed an AI-driven automated basemap of Lusaka, Zambia, to address the challenges of rapid urbanisation and limited availability of reliable spatial data. Covering 420 km², this project applied aerial imagery provided by the Zambia Survey Department and trained Machine Learning algorithms to detect and classify features such as buildings, informal settlements, roads, and water bodies. The resulting basemap enables urban planners, policymakers, and government agencies to make informed decisions about infrastructure development, land administration, transport planning, and social service delivery. Furthermore, the digital mapping provides a robust framework for census integration, disaster response planning, and sustainable city growth strategies in Zambia.
