    Project Details

Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in Burlington, Massachusetts, recognized the potential of artificial intelligence to transform emergency radiology. Spearheaded by Dr. Jeffrey A. Hashim and Dr. Christoph Wald, the initiative aimed to address the critical challenge of case backlog, especially during night shifts when radiologists face high volumes with limited manpower. The hospital integrated AI algorithms into their radiology workflow starting in 2018. These AI tools were designed to automatically triage cases with potentially life-threatening conditions such as pulmonary embolisms, intracranial haemorrhages, and cervical fractures. By prioritizing these urgent cases, the algorithms significantly reduced the anxiety and workload for radiologists. This system not only improved the efficiency of case handling but also maintained the quality of diagnostics by providing a 'second reader' for the radiologists.
