Case Study
Aerial Precision Photogrammetry for Volcanic Monitoring and Disaster Management in Iceland

Source: GIM International
The project centers on utilizing high-precision aerial photogrammetry to monitor volcanic eruptions, lava flows, and related geohazards in Iceland. Spearheaded by the Icelandic Institute of Natural History (IINH), it integrates state-of-the-art Phase One PAS systems for rapid data collection, stabilization, and georeferencing. The initiative addresses the need for accurate, timely, and efficient mapping of rapidly evolving volcanic landscapes. Through high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) and 3D mesh models, the team provides critical insights into lava flow dynamics, subsurface inflation zones, and potential eruption precursors. These outputs enable the Civil Protection Department and other agencies to assess risks, plan evacuations, and mitigate hazards effectively.
