The Huasco Pellet Plant, operated by the state-owned CAP Mining, processes iron ore from the Los Colorados mines by pelletizing the ore and reducing impurities. Built in 1978, the plant's aging infrastructure and proximity to the sea have led to significant maintenance challenges, including equipment corrosion. To address these issues, CAP Mining and the State of Chile embarked on a re-engineering initiative to enhance maintenance conditions, reduce pollution risks, and optimize the plant's operations.
Surveying Control Systems Ltda. was tasked with generating a detailed 3D model of the plant to facilitate the redesign and restructuring process. Utilizing advanced aerial LiDAR technology (YellowScan Vx15) and supplemental terrestrial laser scanning, the survey captured an average of 60 points/m², with densities reaching 382 points/m² in critical zones. This approach delivered a comprehensive, as-built 3D model with exceptional precision, enabling engineers to plan the placement of new thickeners, conveyor belts, and stockpile sites, as well as identify buildings requiring refurbishment due to structural corrosion.
