World Heritage Ireland is a national initiative dedicated to promoting, protecting, and managing Ireland’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It operates under the National Monuments Service, which is part of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage. The initiative supports Ireland’s commitment to the UNESCO World Heritage Convention, ratified in 1991, and aims to conserve sites of Outstanding Universal Value. Ireland currently has two inscribed World Heritage Sites—Brú na Bóinne (1993) and Sceilg Mhichíl (1996)—and maintains a tentative list for future nominations. World Heritage Ireland also facilitates public education, international cooperation, and climate vulnerability assessments for heritage sites.
